The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering changing its policy on family stays during overseas tours. This comes after Virat Kohli spoke about the importance of having family members around, especially during long tours.
BCCI’s Current Rule on Family Stay
After India’s 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, the BCCI introduced new rules restricting family stays. According to this rule:
- On tours lasting 45 days or more, players’ families could join only after the first two weeks and stay for a maximum of 14 days.
- On shorter tours, family members were allowed to stay for only one week.
- Players also had to take permission from the selection committee chairman and head coach for any exceptions.
Virat Kohli’s Comments & Possible U-Turn
Recently, Kohli spoke at Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Innovational Lab Indian Sports Summit in Bengaluru. He shared how having family members around helps players mentally and improves performance.
Following this, reports suggest that the BCCI is reconsidering its decision. The board may allow players to apply for extended family stays during long overseas tours. If the change happens, it could come into effect during India’s five-match Test series in England, scheduled from June 20 to August 4.
While no official confirmation has come yet, the BCCI is expected to discuss the matter before India’s England tour. Meanwhile, Indian players will be busy with IPL 2025, starting on March 22. The opening match will be played between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
