Karnataka Government Launches 'Beyond Screens' Initiative to Curb Digital Dependence

The Karnataka government has officially launched ‘Beyond Screens’, India’s first industry-led digital detox initiative. This innovative program addresses the growing concern of digital addiction among citizens.

According to Money Control, the initiative represents a significant partnership between the state government and the gaming industry. It aims to promote healthier digital habits through structured interventions and comprehensive support systems.

The program was inaugurated by IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge at GAFX 2025. The launch included the unveiling of a dedicated Digital Detox Centre and official website. ‘Beyond Screens’ emerges as a collaborative effort between Karnataka’s Department of Electronics, IT, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology and the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF). The initiative will provide resources for individuals struggling with excessive screen time.

Powered by Kahamind Healthcare Private Ltd, the center will serve as a comprehensive resource hub. It will offer counseling, intervention programs, and guidance on responsible technology use.

Minister Kharge emphasized his personal philosophy regarding digital consumption during the launch event. “As a firm believer in balance in our digital lives, I always say, ‘sunlight before screen light’.” He outlined the initiative’s commitment to addressing often-ignored challenges of digital addiction. The approach includes providing structured support, raising awareness, and integrating digital wellness into mainstream healthcare.

Kharge highlighted the importance of setting healthy boundaries with technology. “Whether it’s setting boundaries with your devices or learning to unplug without guilt, we are here to help every step of the way.” The minister expressed confidence in the initiative’s potential impact on digital well-being. “This is a crucial step towards fostering a healthier relationship with technology, where our people can thrive both online and offline.”

AIGF CEO Roland Landers spoke about the federation’s role in this pioneering effort. “As the oldest and largest industry body for online gaming in India, AIGF has always been committed to fostering a safe, responsible ecosystem.” He expressed pride in supporting the government’s vision for digital wellness. “We are honoured to support the Government of Karnataka in launching Beyond Screens, a pioneering initiative in digital wellness.” Landers emphasized the initiative’s significance for the gaming industry. “This collaboration with the Government of Karnataka is a crucial step toward setting a benchmark for the digital industry.”

The initiative has established clear objectives focusing on education, support, and empowerment. It aims to raise awareness about excessive digital usage and its potential negative impacts. ‘Beyond Screens’ will develop research-driven strategies to support individuals and communities. The program will integrate digital detox programs into mainstream healthcare systems.

The initiative provides structured solutions through short, medium, and long-term objectives. These include immediate support for those currently struggling with digital dependency. The government and AIGF have developed a strategic roadmap with clear, actionable goals. This comprehensive approach addresses various aspects of digital well-being.

The program is expected to evolve into a nationwide movement over time. It aims to integrate digital detox strategies into broader public health initiatives. The launch marks a significant milestone in addressing digital addiction in India. It represents the first coordinated effort between government and industry to tackle this growing concern.

The Government of Karnataka has implemented several measures to promote responsible gaming earlier such as mindful technology awareness, regulatory discussions and gaming accelerator initiatives.
