A 35-year-old temporary lecturer at the Government Law College in Rasipuram, identified as P. Arunachalam, was found dead at his residence on Tuesday. According to The Times of India, Arunachalam’s death is attributed to suicide following significant financial losses incurred through online gambling.
Arunachalam, who is left behind by his wife and two-year-old son, had developed a habit of playing online rummy. To fund this, he borrowed several lakhs from relatives and friends, all of which he lost in gambling. On Tuesday evening, after returning from classes, Arunachalam locked himself in his room. When he failed to respond to repeated knocks, his wife, with the help of neighbors, forced the door open. They found him unresponsive and rushed him to the Rasipuram Government Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The Rasipuram police have registered a case and sent the body for postmortem examination at the government hospital. Further investigations are underway to understand the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
This incident is not isolated in Namakkal district. G2G News reported that in February 2025, a 45-year-old truck driver named S. Tamil Mani from Namakkal died by suicide after losing ₹75 lakh in online gambling. Tamil Mani had been actively involved in multiple forms of online gambling, including online rummy and IPL cricket betting, for an extended period. His addiction led to mounting financial losses, culminating in his tragic death.
Additionally, just two weeks ago, Premraj, a private bank branch manager from Namakkal, was found dead on a railway track in Karur district. This occurred a day after his wife and two children were found dead in their home. Premraj had incurred losses of ₹50 lakh due to online gambling, which is suspected to have led to the family tragedy.
