In the wake of the IPL 2024’s recent high-scoring match between KKR and Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Rajasthan Royals spinner R Ashwin has called for measures to ‘save the bowlers’.

Kolkata Knight Riders, after putting to bat first, scored 261 runs, capitalising on a brilliant start from Phillip Salt and Sunil Narine, who forged a 138-run opening partnership in just 63 deliveries.

Later, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, and Andre Russell contributed quickfire cameos to bolster KKR’s total. After posting a big total, teams often feel confident, but that wasn’t the case in this match.

Punjab Kings began their innings explosively, with Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow forging a rapid 93-run opening partnership in just 36 balls.

Although Prabhsimran Singh departed after a brisk 54 off 20 balls, Jonny Bairstow continued the assault, remaining unbeaten on 108 runs from just 48 deliveries.

The English batter was later joined by Shashank Singh, who further accelerated the chase with an unbeaten 68 off 28 balls, helping Punjab Kings reach the target in just 18.4 overs.

In response to the bowlers’ tough time in both innings, Ravichandran Ashwin took to X [formerly Twitter] and wrote:

“Save the bowlers, someone plsss”
