Former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel has been appointed as the bowling coach for the Indian men’s cricket team, starting his first tenure with the BCCI from September 1.
Morkel’s first appointment as bowling coach will be the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting on September 19. This appointment reunites him with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The duo played together for three seasons with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL and later reunited as part of the coaching staff for the Lucknow Super Giants.
Morkel has taken over from Paras Mhambrey as India’s bowling coach. This decision marks the BCCI’s first hiring of an overseas coach in nearly ten years, following former head coach Duncan Fletcher.
Morne Morkel’s Coaching Experience
Morne Morkel coached the Babar Azam-led Pakistan team during the 2023 ODI World Cup but left the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) before his contract ended.
Pakistan’s campaign under his coaching was disappointing, as they failed to reach the semi-finals and placed sixth in the points table. Morkel, along with Gambhir, led the exceptional coaching team at the Lucknow Super Giants.
