The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, has revealed why Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were not included in the 2024 Duleep Trophy squad.
Shah stated that the decision to exclude these star players was made to avoid the risk of injury before the upcoming intense home Test season. The BCCI wants to preserve their fitness for the busy schedule ahead.
Notably, top players like KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ravindra Jadeja, among others, have been named in the four squads for the first round of the 2024 Duleep Trophy.
The inclusion of these players in the domestic first-class tournament is intended to prepare them for the demanding home Test season, especially since many struggled against spin in Sri Lanka recently.
‘We Should Not Insist Them’ – Jay Shah
While there were earlier reports suggesting that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might also participate in the Duleep Trophy, the BCCI ultimately chose not to include them.
Shah clarified the reasoning behind this decision, saying, “We should not insist on players like Rohit and Virat to play in the Duleep Trophy. They will risk injury.”
Shah emphasized that Kohli and Rohit have made significant contributions to Indian cricket and deserve to be managed with the respect they have earned.
