Team India’s recent announcement of the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the USA and West Indies, sparked questions about the exclusion of promising young batter Rinku Singh.

During a press conference, Captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media, acknowledging that Rinku Singh’s omission was a difficult decision. He explained that the team prioritized spin options due to the expected spin-friendly conditions in the USA and West Indies.

Notably, India has picked up a total of four spinners in their squad, namely, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja. While some teams typically opt for two spinners, India’s strategy reflects a calculated gamble as they are prioritizing spin over a finisher like Rinku Singh.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar echoed Sharma’s sentiment, admitting that leaving out Rinku Singh was a challenging call.

Here’s what Ajit Agarkar said in the press-conference:

“Rinku Singh’s exclusion was the toughest decision. It’s got nothing to do with Rinku. We felt the team could benefit from an extra spin option with two wrist spinners. He is in the reserves, so that’s how close he was.”
