Ever since the BCCI announced the 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, critics have been all over KL Rahul for not batting in the middle order for Lucknow Super Giants in the ongoing IPL, despite that being his only shot at making it into the Team India squad.

However, recent reports suggest that Indian captain Rohit Sharma had already informed KL Rahul that he wouldn’t be selected for India’s T20 World Cup squad even before IPL 2024 began. As a result, Rahul chose to stick to his opening batter role for LSG and didn’t move to the middle order.

Sources reveal that Lucknow Super Giants brought in Devdutt Padikkal with the intention of opening for LSG and moving KL Rahul to the middle order. However, when Rahul received a clear message from the Indian captain, he had no option but to continue opening.

“KL Rahul was prepared to bat in the middle order for LSG, which is why we brought Padikkal into our side. But a couple of days before the IPL, KL had a chat with Rohit, and he made it clear to KL Rahul that he is not in the mix. That’s why KL opened in the IPL,” said the LSG insider.

Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson have been selected as the wicketkeeper-batter for Team India for the T20 World Cup 2024, based on their performances in the ongoing IPL 2024.
