Mumbai Indians’ hopes for the IPL 2024 playoffs have all but vanished after their recent loss to Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium. Their dismal performance throughout the tournament, with eight losses in 11 matches, leaves them languishing near the bottom of the points table with just six points.

Mathematically, a path to the playoffs remains for the Hardik Pandya-led side, but it’s an incredibly narrow one. Here’s why Mumbai Indians’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs are virtually non-existent from here on:

Is MI Out of IPL 2024?

With only three wins under their belt, Mumbai Indians face an uphill battle. Even if they manage to win all their remaining games, they would only reach 12 points, which is unlikely to be enough for playoffs qualification.

Teams like Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders have already crossed the 14-point mark, further solidifying their positions.

Additionally, Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad currently share 12 points, and one of them is likely to gain an edge with their upcoming matches.

This leaves Mumbai Indians in a tough spot or even can be said they are virtually knocked out of contention for the playoffs, as their path forward requires not only winning all their remaining games but also depending on the results of other teams.

Even if they manage to fulfil this near-impossible scenario, their chances of making it to the top four are slim. Historically, teams have needed a minimum of 16 points to secure a playoff spot in the 10-team format.
