T20 World Cup Trophy

The upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the US faces a shadow of security concerns following threats from a Pakistan-based terror outfit.

Pro-ISIS groups, including IS-K, have issued calls for violence against global sporting events.

“The Cricket West Indies (CWI) has sought to allay fears of security threat to the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies even as the Caribbean islands have received terror alerts to the global event from North Pakistan,” Cricbuzz reported on Sunday.

CWI CEO Jonny Graves assured the public that their “number one priority” is the safety of everyone involved. They are closely collaborating with authorities in host countries and continuously monitoring the global threat landscape to mitigate risks.

The concerns stem from potential threats posed by IS-K, a branch active in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This group has released video messages urging attacks in their regions, raising serious security questions for major events like the World Cup.

Caribbean authorities are actively tracking these threats and implementing a “comprehensive and robust security plan.”

The tournament, scheduled from June 1 to 29, will see matches across various Caribbean islands and US cities. Final stages will be held in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and Barbados.

As Pakistan insists on India’s participation in the Champions Trophy, questions will undoubtedly arise regarding their ability to ensure a safe and secure environment for all teams, including India, amidst these ongoing security threats.
