IPL 2024: KKR Players Stuck in Varanasi After Failed Landings in Kolkata

The Kolkata Knight Riders team had an unexpected detour on their journey from Lucknow to Kolkata on Monday, as their flight was diverted not once, but twice, leaving them stranded in Varanasi for the night.

KKR, who recently ascended to the top of the IPL 2024 points table after winning eight out of the 11 matches they have played so far, departed from Lucknow around 5:45 PM, expecting to reach Kolkata at 7:25 PM.

However, due to adverse weather conditions, they were unable to land in Kolkata and their flight was diverted to Guwahati.

Arriving in Guwahati around 8:45 PM, the team received clearance to depart for Kolkata later in the night. Unfortunately, they encountered further bad weather, forcing another diversion, this time back to Varanasi, where they spent the night.

“Due to inclement weather over Kolkata, the KKR charter flight has been diverted to Guwahati. We’ve just landed here, We’ve got clearance to fly back to Kolkata now, from Guwahati. Estimated arrival: 11 pm,” an update provided by the KKR media team as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“Flight took off from Guwahati to Kolkata, was scheduled to land at 11 pm. Couldn’t land once again due to bad weather, despite several attempts. Diverted mid-air to Varanasi now. Just landed here,” it added.

While stranded in Varanasi, the players took the opportunity to explore the city before their scheduled flight back to Kolkata at 1:30 PM on Tuesday. Notably, KKR is set to play their next match on Saturday against the Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens.
