Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper KL Rahul’s future with the franchise seems bleak after a string of disappointing performances and a viral video showing a heated exchange with team owner Sanjiv Goenka following their crushing defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The hefty price tag of Rs 17 crore paid for KL Rahul in the 2022 auction now seems a distant memory, with reports suggesting he will not be retained ahead of the mega auctions in 2025.

While there’s no official confirmation, speculation is rife that KL Rahul might even step down from captaincy for the remaining two matches of the 2024 season to focus solely on his batting.

This move might be welcomed by the management considering Rahul’s sluggish batting, particularly in the powerplay. Furthermore, it is his strike rate of 136.09, which has been a major concern.

SRH openers dismantled LSG’s bowling attack, chasing down the target in under 10 overs. On the other hand, LSG’s batters, including Rahul (29 off 33 balls), struggled on the same pitch.

Mathematically, LSG can still reach the playoffs by winning their remaining matches against Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. However, their poor net run-rate (-0.760) makes qualification highly improbable.
