Indian cricket team captain, Rohit Sharma, shared his thoughts on the Impact Player Rule in the IPL, expressing doubts about its implications for nurturing all-rounders in the top echelons of Indian cricket.

The Impact Player Rule, initially tried in the domestic circuit during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022, was officially adopted by the IPL in 2023, following its success in the Big Bash League.

IPL teams have since strategically employed the rule to swap in specialist bowlers or batters based on game conditions.

What is the Impact Player Rule?

The Impact Player rule, introduced in IPL 2023, allows teams to bring in a 12th player at any point in a match to replace a player from the XI after the toss.

In a conversation with the podcast Club Prairie, captain Rohit Sharma stated that he is worried about the development of Indian all-rounders in future.

“I generally feel that it is going to hold back [development of allrounders] because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players,” Rohit said on the Club Prairie Podcast.

“I’m not a big fan of impact player. You are taking out so much from the game just to make it little entertainment for the people around. But if you look [at] genuinely just the cricketing aspect of it.”

“I can give you so many examples – guys like Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which for us [India team] is not a good thing. I don’t know what you can do about it, but I’m not a fan of it honestly speaking,” Rohit Sharma said.
